For over two decades the parade has welcomed the Christmas season to the downtown area and city as a whole. The procession begins outside of Parker ACE Hardware’s location on Court Street, and will make its way onto Ashmun Street at 7 p.m. “This is what we consider the official kickoff for the holiday season and celebrations in downtown Sault, Michigan and our community,” said Downtown Development Authority Marketing and Events Coordinator Lindsay Ellis. “We’re expecting a visit from Santa during it.” Although the parade falls under the DDA umbrella, Ellis said Parker Ace Hardware makes the event possible. Due to their sponsorship, floats do not have to pay to participate. Entrants range from War Memorial Hospital to Girl Scouts to traditional holiday themes. “The parade route will start along Court Street, and turn on to Ashmun Street then come up the bridge onto the island,” said Ellis. “The parade will end at City Hall where our wonderful mayor and Santa will light the Christmas tree.” The tree lighting at City Hall will feature caroling and entertainment from members of the Madrigal dinner. The Salvation Army will also be handing out hot chocolate. Floats are asked to lineup around 6 p.m. outside of the hardware store prior to cruising past bundled spectators. So far, there are 15 registered floats, but more could be added to the lineup by contacting the DDA office. “The parade will include a competition to win Downtown Dollars,” added Ellis. “First place will receive 300, second place 200 and third place 100.” Downtown Dollars can be spent at local participating businesses downtown. The DDA marketing and events coordinator said the chief criteria used to judge will be how lit the floats are.
